| | Born in Seville, OH on Feb. 22, 1851. Caughey ran away from home at age 13 and enlisted as a drummer boy in the Union army. Following the Civil War, he spent 20 years associated with Major Evarts, a Philadelphia historian. He arrived in San Francisco in 1889. For nine years he worked in the art departments of local newspapers before becoming a staff artist for the San Jose Mercury. About 1900 he moved to Portland, OR where he continued as a sketch artist for the Telegram.
