| | Born in Shasta County, CA on Sept. 29, 1874, the daughter of a stage coach driver. Craddock was deaf from age three due to scarlet fever, and attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley from 1884-95. At that school she studied art with Theophilus D'Estrella who greatly influenced her future work. After graduation she accepted a position as governess to a deaf boy in East Oakland named Phillips Frisbie Lewis to whom she gave his first art lessons.
