| Sam Caldwell is known for his coastal scenes of waterfowl and
game-fish. Working primarily in transparent watercolor, the
Houston native seeks to capture the atmosphere of the moment, as well
as the color and drama inherent in his outdoor subjects.
Many
of his recent images feature young hunters and fishers. “Wildlife
is primary in my work,” he says, but notes that “people are important
elements of wildlife.”
Early in his career, Sam became involved in outdoor organizations like
Ducks Unlimited and the Coastal Conservation Association. He
remains deeply involved in promoting coastal scenes as fine art, and
uses his printed images to help the coast. The Texas Parks and
Wildlife Expo posters of '93 and '94, and a '95 Operation Game Thief
poster have become classic outdoor images of the '90s. His work
has been featured for years in the TP and W Annual Regulation booklet.
When Texas Parks and Wildlife
magazine did their first-ever art center spread, they chose a Caldwell
painting, which then raised money for TP&W at an Expo
auction.
To open the millennium, Sam produced a fund-raising print for Sea Center Texas, Silver King Express, and another print, Tradition Continued for the recent Operation Game Thief event at Enron Field.
He is proud that the American Red Cross chose one of his paintings to help provide funds for 9-11 relief.
Caldwell is also well known as an outdoor writer. His co-authored book for the CCA, Change of Tides, A Narrative History of the Coastal Conservation Association, was named as Texas' best out door book for 2000.
Sam Caldwell spends painting time in the outdoors, as well as studios in Humble, Splendora and Houston, Texas.
