I recently bought a piece of Shirley Clement's artwork at an antique shop in Norfolk, Virginia. On the back of this oil painting was a brief bit of information about her. The painting was of a young girl holding a flower across her lap and the same flowers in her hair, on both sides. She appears to be African American. The biography is as follows:
Shirley Clement is one of the few women in Florida accepted for membership by the American Watercolor Society She has been a member since 1953.
The University of Florida has purchased two of her paintings for its permanent collection Many of her works have been sold to private collections throughout the United States.
Miss Clement's oils and watercolors have been exhibited from New York to Miami, winning many awards. She has been honored by one-man shows in many Florida cities.
Critics have applauded the apparent spontaneity of her work and the vibrance and luminosity of her color.
Miss Clement has developed a personal oil technique, utilizing plastic glazes that permits unusually brilliant and transparent effects.
In four years of formal art studies, Miss Clement had the opportunity to study with many outstanding artists, including Hilton Leech and Loran Wilford.
Her father was a freelance commercial artist in New York City for twenty-five years. She is related on her mother's side of the family, to the late Henri Matisse.
