| A portrait painter, expedition artist, and daguerrotypist, Soloman
Carvalho was active in both the eastern and western United
States. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and moved with
his family to Baltimore in 1828, and in 1835, to Philadelphia, where he
was a portraiture student of Thomas Sully. From 1838 to 1850, he
worked as an artist in Philadelphia and was also active in Charleston,
Washington DC, and Baltimore where he had a daguerreotype studio and
exhibited at (showing 500 of 2301 characters). |
