Biography from AskART:
| | Born in Bath, England, he emigrated to New York City as a child. He studied art with Henry Inman, with whom he became a studio partner from 1824 to 1827. With Nathaniel Rogers, he founded the National Academy of Design. From 1850 to 1859, he served as Vice-President of the Academy but stopped exhibiting his own work in 1851. He also was a drawing instructor at New York University, and became one of the city's most sought after miniaturists. Some critics such as Matthew Baigell regard his figures as "boneless even when he captures the spark of personality of the sitter." |
