Biography from AskART:
| | Born in London, he became one of the most sought after wood engravers in the publishing industry. He came to the U.S. at age five, and was apprenticed in Chicago to a commerical wood engraver. In New York he worked as a magazine engraver, and by age 31, was so proficient in reproducing old master paintings that he went to Europe in search of more originals. He stayed for 27 years, sending back reproductions for "Century Magazine" that did much to establish it as a prestigious art magazine. He lived a reveling life as a bon vivant and pioneer nudest. The demand for his engraving skills was replaced by photo-engraving. |
