| Portrait and genre painter, William Brown Cooper spent time in Europe, following his return he set up a studio in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1840s. He painted around the country over the next 15 years, and by 1860 he was painting and teaching in Nashville, TN.
His older brother, Washington Bogart Cooper was also a portrait painter, they are often confused as they both were listed in directories and signed their work as "W.B. Cooper". They even collaborated on a project for the Tennessee Historical Society, completing portraits for every Tennessee governor in the 1850s.
