| William Congdon Coffin was born in Massachusetts in 1816. By the 1870s Coffin had moved to northern California. He pursued a sculpting career in San Jose in 1876 and San Francisco in 1877-79. In 1880 he married artist Hannah Millard and in 1892 purchased 160 acres in Lake County, CA where they farmed. After the death of his wife in 1900, he returned to New York.
