| William A. Corbett began drawing at an early age. He did signs
and displays for theaters and nightclubs around Pittsburg. He
studied art with Vincent Nesbert at the Pittsburg Art Institute and
with Robert Gwathmoy, Roy Hilton and Robert Laper at the Carnegie
Institute of Technology. He also studied painting and sculpture
at the Louisville Art Center. Corbett was in the Army Engineers
at Fort Knox, Kentucky and studied, practiced and had exhibits with
army artists there in 1941 thru 1943.
The following information was submitted by Tracy Hoffman, who owns a painting of Don Quichote by the artist as well as the following letter addressed to Dr. and Mrs. James R. Brandon, the original owners of the painting:
Dear Dr. - Mrs James R. Brandon just a belated note and a short history of myself. My health isn't the best, but I do paint and draw a lot. I hope the painting lives well with you, and thanks for your interest. Don Quixote is one of my main loves in paint- I have painted him quite a few times and still enjoy it alot. I'm having an exhibition of my work at the Hobbelius Kaostra Art Gallery beginning December 2, If everything follows the plan, 383 Cocoanut Row, Palm Beach. Thanks for your Interest Bill Corbett

Willam A. Corbett, born in Pittsburgh, Pa,. June 21, 1914
began drawing at an early age. Did signs and displays for theatres and night clubs around Pittsburgh. Studied Art with Vincent Nesbert at Pittsburgh Art Institute and with Robert Gwathmey, Roy Hilton and Robert Leper at Carnegie Institute of Technology. He was in Army Engineers at Fort Knox, Ky, and studied, practiced and had exhibits with army artists there in 1941-1943. Married Ruth Osborne of Louisville in 1943 and have one son, Michael. Studied painting and sculpture at Louisville Art Center. Exhibited in Kentucky and Southern Indiana Exhibitions. Designed and did art work for General Outdoor Advertising Co.
Studied Two years at Boston museum School with Karl Zerbe, Daivid Aronson and others.
Moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1951. Exhibits with Broward Art Guild, Boca Raton Art Guild and the Florida Federation of Art.
Had one-man exhibit at the "Little Gallery" in Louisville and two one man shows at the "Miami Beach Art Center" and one at the Hollywood Library.
Very much interested in materials and technique, content and style in painting. Favorite Artists are El Greco, Leonardo, Rembrandt, Renoir, Burchfield and Andrew Wyeth, Jr. Favorite subjects include horses, clowns and characters like Don Quixote.Painting Prizes include: Army Art Show--- 1st Prize in Landscape, 1942 Kentucky & southern Indiana Exhibition-- Honorable mentions for Fisherman's Curse 1949, Don Q 1952, Ravens Roost, 1947. Boca Raton Art Exhibit-- Merit Award, oil, Don Quixote 1954. First Prize in oil RUST a trompe L'oeil, 1957 Honorable Mention, Three Guitars 1958 Harry Rich Florida Art competition-- Popular Prize Buckskin a trompe Ll'oeil, 1956. First Prize, Legacy, a trompe L'oeil, 1957 Florida Federation of Art --- Award Don Quixote, Lacquer, 1957. then he signed it Bill Corbett
