English sculptor and painter, William John Coffee was born in England (1774). He began sculpting in terra cotta, from 1795 to 1816 in Derby and London. He exhibited a number of times at the Royal Academy. In 1816 Coffee came to America, settling in New York City for the next decade.
He executed a bust of Hugh Williamson (1816), which is now at the New York Historical Society. In 1817 he exhibited at the American Academy two terra cotta animals, an "Infant Morpheus in Terra Cotta," and se (showing 500 of 1166 characters). |
