| William Leonard Cooper was born in Salinas, CA on July 14, 1900. Cooper's parents came to California following the Civil War. Local author John Steinbeck grew up with the Coopers and immortalized the family in his Travels With Charley. Leonard Cooper studied art at the College of the Pacific and painted with Leon Amyx. As well as a painter, he was also a violinist and piano teacher in the Salinas area during the 1930s. He died while vacationing in Los Angeles on July 25, 1948.
