| | Born in Bedminster, England in 1852. Challoner was educated at York Naval Academy. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1880, he was active in New Orleans until 1887. He then moved to San Francisco where he became a U.S. citizen. After 1891 he was again based in New Orleans. During the Spanish-American War he was commander of a warship and, after the war, was captain of a clipper ship. In his leisure he painted marines and maritime subjects. Challoner died in Baltimore, MD on Oct. 19, 1901. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1888.
