The following bio-sketch is based on the annotations in Artists in Virginia before 1900, with some inclusions by Bruce Kusrow:
Willie Henderson Caskie was born in Virginia in 1834. Nothing is known of his formal artistic training. During the Civil War he served as a major in Pickett’s Brigade of The Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. At least one pencil on paper sketch by Caskie that pictures a Virginia Confederate unit camp scene, and is entitled “Near Bunker Hill, Oct. 25, 1862,” has survived. Following the close of the war in 1865, Caskie settled in Richmond, Virginia where he worked as a portrait artist. Little is known of his work in Richmond, other than the fact that during the years 1876-77 his studio was located at 401 East Main Street. He moved to Texas in 1877, and died in that state in 1900.
