| Portrait painter Abraham Delanoy, born in 1742 in New York City, was the second American to go to London to study with history painter Benjamin West. Delanoy may be one of the young men who figure in "The American School," 1765, a painting by Matthew Pratt of West and his pupils.
Having been under West's instruction in London, Delanoy enjoyed certain advantages helping his prospects for a career in America. His early work bore a likeness of his teacher, examples are included in the New York Historical Society, New York City. Though mask-like in expression, the work reveals basic sophistication in its conscious, though not harsh modeling and gracious turn of the head.
Once back in the colonies, in 1767, however, Delanoy reverted to a more linear, primitive style, though he appears to have enjoyed some success at first, painting members of New York's Beekman family.
Little is known of his early life except that he was a descendant of Abraham De Lanoy (d. 1702), who was the stepfather of New York limner Evert Duychinck III (1677-1727). In the later part of his career, he took the road of the itinerant artist, painting in Charleston, South Carolina, and the West Indies, where he may have gone for his health. He was back in New York by 1771, but fell increasingly out of the mainstream, turning finally to sign painting.
What little is known of his later art, suggests a dependence upon traditions established by other, more talented artists like John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart and even Ralph Earl. He spent the last years of his life in New Haven, Connecticut, where he painted portraits. He died in Westchester County, New York in 1795, having suffered from consumption as well as much poverty towards the end of his life.

Abraham DeLanoy is my gr-gr-gr-gr-great grandfather. He was married to Rachel Martling in 1764 and had 11 children. Their names, in order, were : John, Abraham, William, Jane, Daniel, Mary, James, Rachel, David, Sarah, Henry. The first three children were born in New York City, the younger ones in Phillipsburgh, (now Tarrytown), Fishkill, and Mt Pleasant, New York.
