This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Although he began his career as a wildlife artist, Andrew Denman enjoys painting a variety of subjects from genre to still life to tromp l'oeil and he is using this time in his career to explore and challenge his talent.  However, his main interest remains wildlife art, and says that focusing on animals makes people in their fast-paced lives slow down and look at them and think about them.

Denman is a studio painter, and because his approach is slow and tedious, he works on several paintings at once.  His style ranges from trompe l'oeil, to partially representational to abstract.   He believes in painting each animal as an individual so he does spend time in the field photographing animals and viewing them in their natural habitat.  He also relies on field-guides and study skins to help him get the details right.

Denman was a precocious, assertive youngster about his artwork, and at age thirteen, tried unsucessfully to persuade a Lafayette, California gallery owner to represent his colored pencil drawings.  By age 27, he was an established artist, becoming the youngest member of the Society of Animal Artists several years earlier.  The dealer whom he first approached now represents him and calls him the "Tiger Woods of wildlife art". (Gangelhoff 124)

He was raised in San Francisco and grew up with a great love of animals as well as artistic expression.  In highschool, he switched from pencils to acrylic.  He graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga, California in 2000 with a fine-art degree, and from that time has dedicated himself to fine-art painting.
