One of the most successful miniaturists of his day, Anson Dickinson began miniature painting in Litchfield about 1803, and the following year set up a studio in New York City. An itinerant artist, he spent twenty years travelling in New York State and Connecticut, as well as to Charleston, Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, Montreal, and Quebec. But after 1825 he divided his time between New York City, Washington, and Connecticut.
