Arthur Devis was born in Preston, Lancashire, England in 1763. He received his first instruction in art from his father, Arthur Devis, a painter of conversation pieces, with whom he is sometimes confused. He made rapid progress, and obtained at an earlier age than usual the silver medal from Royal Academy and more importantly the good opinion of Sir Joshua Reynolds. When he was twenty years old he was appointed by the East India Company as draftsman to accompany Capt. Wilson on a voyage around t (showing 500 of 1118 characters). |
