Arthur William Devis was born in Preston, Lancashire, England in 1763. He
received his first instruction in art from his father, Arthur Devis, a
painter of conversation pieces, with whom he is sometimes confused. He
made rapid progress, and obtained at an earlier age than usual the
silver medal from Royal Academy and more importantly the good opinion of
Sir Joshua Reynolds. When he was twenty years old he was appointed by
the East India Company as draftsman to accompany Capt. Wilson on a
voyage around the world. Their vessel was wrecked and they had to endure
many hardships.
Devis returned to England in 1795. He painted
several historical pictures for Mr. Alex Davidson, also an excellent
portrait of Nelson. His life was one of vicissitudes and difficulties
and unfortunately he died of a stroke of apoplexy in 1822. Devis was an
equal if not superior historical painter to any of his day, but
circumstances were against him.
