This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A portrait painter and printmaker, Betty De Jong was noted for the realism of her portraits and her honesty in depicting imperfections as well as beauty in her subjects.

She was born in Paris, France and studied there at the Academy Julian* with Jean Paul Laurens.  In June, 1914, she arrived in San Francisco where she settled. She completed about 40 portraits and also did woodblock* prints, which she exhibited with the California Society of Etchers. She also exhibited her work in 1915 at the Panama-Pacific Exposition*.

On the evening of January 20, 1917, De Jong, age 31, committed suicide in San Francisco.  She did this in the presence of Dr. William S. Porter, whose portrait she had been painting and who tried to talk her out of committing suicide.  She died early on January 21, 1917." (Harlow)
