This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following information is true and verifiable by any number of members of my family still residing in Wilmington, DE. My cousin, Raymond Olivere, of New York City (also an artist) should also be able to verify some of this information.
The following biography is from Susan Olivere Bailey, Magnolia, MS.  She wrote: "Charles DeFeo was my great uncle, brother to my paternal grandmother.:

He was born one of eight children near New Castle, DE, to Italian immigrant parents.  He studied under Howard Pyle in Wilmington, and later left school and moved to New York where he continued his studies in art.  He lived in New York City for the remainder of his life.
In addition to being a well-known artist of game fish and birds, he earned money in his younger days, illustrating covers for sport and detective magazines.  During the 1940s and 1950s, he created magnificent game fish and game bird paintings that were used in prized annual calendars distributed by the Seagrams Company.
In addition to his painting, Charles DeFeo was known as a world-class fisherman, and for many more years than he painted, he hand tied the most intricate and exquisite flies for the Atlantic salmon.  Most of the flies are lost to the public eye, lying at the bottom of rusted tackle boxes.  One of Charles DeFeo's favorite fishing companions was Ted Williams, the baseball 'great'.  During Ted's off-season, he and Uncle Charles would travel to South America and fish.  Samples of his art and the flies he tied can be found on various sites across the Internet.
Contrary to public perception, Uncle Charles was married.  For more than 30 years he was married to a lovely woman named Bessie (surname unknown).  No one in our family knew he was married until his death because Aunt Bessie was divorced and, an artist and an heiress in her own right who was disowned by her family for marrying my uncle.  When we would travel to New York to visit him, Aunt Bessie would conveniently go out of town.
As far as I know, Uncle Charles only painted one portrait.  He captured in oils, a photograph of my sister at approximately 12 years of age.
He was always one of my favorite great uncles; a gentle, soft spoken man who adored his closest older sister, my grandmother, and who visited at least once a year during the holidays.
