Biography from Henry's Auktionshaus:
Charles Gifford Dyer studied in Paris at L. Jacquesson and since 1871 at the Munich Academy.  He undertook several extended study trips in the Orient.

Biography from Moynihan Fine Art:
Charles Gifford Dyer was born in Chicago, Illinois, one of six children of Vermont-born Dr. Charles Volney Dyer who settled there in 1835 as the first surgeon in the region, at Fort Dearborn. By 1837 he also  headed the Chicago part of the "Underground Railroad", helping escaped slaves to freedom in Canada.

Dr. Dyer  was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, who as President appointed Dr Dyer as a Judge under a treaty with the U.K. to oversee the abolition of slavery from the source in Sierra Leone.

Dr. Dyer and his wife also adopted a daughter Cornelia, who was my great-grandmother!

Because of the Great Chicago Fire of of Oct. 8-10,1871, much of the city's central business district was destroyed and many vital records were lost. Charles Gifford Dyer was born either in 1851 or 1846, according to different sources, and died in Germany in 1912.

Dr. Dyer was in Rome in 1865 when news of Lincoln’s death arrived, and was prevailed on to give eulogies for several groups of mourning Americans, but I don’t know if Charles joined him there.

Charles Gifford Dyer and his wife Mary Anthony Dyer were part of an expatriate community of American artists that lived and worked in Europe in the late 19th century. Their friend John Singer Sargent painted a portrait of her during his first extended stay in Venice as a professional artist, and it is now part of the Art Institute collection in Chicago. Dyer did several paintings of Venice too, according to AskART listings.

His mother’s maiden name was supposedly Gilford, but maybe that’s a mistake and it was Gifford? Again, records are scarce.
