CHARLES TOPHAM DAVIDSON, 1848 - circa 1915
Charles Topham Davidson was a landscape and coastal scene painter, who was the son of Charles Grant Davidson, 1824-1902. He exhibited widely including six teen works at the Royal Academy and twenty-three works at the Royal Society of British Artists.
His first work exhibited at the Royal Academy was titled Moonlight at Sea and shown in 1872, whilst he is recorded as living in Redhill, seven years before he painted this fine atmospheric work of a coastal view. He moved to Falmouth in Cornwall by 1887 and exhibited scenes of the Westcountry whilst living there, including a work titled, Entrance to Falmouth Docks, which he showed at the Royal Academy in 1889.
He finally settled in Swanage, Dorset in 1910 after painting many fine works. ??

Charles Davidson, a painter of landscapes and rustic scenes, was born in England in 1848, the son of Charles Grant Davidson (1824-1902). Primarily a watercolor artist, Charles Topham Davidson studied under John Absolon and produced hundreds of works over the course of his lifetime.
His watercolors have been exhibited at the Old and New Watercolour Socities, while his oils have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. Currently, his works are displayed at institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and Ashmolean, Oxford. |
