Do Xuan Doan, a Vietnamese specialist in lacquer paintings, was born in Hanoi in 1937. He studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts de Hanoi and graduated in 1961. Following in the steps of other Vietnamese master artists, To Ngoc Van, Phan Ke An, and Nguyen Gia Tri, he joined the army, and although Do Xuan Doan continued to paint, he did not retain any works from this period.
In 1985, as conditions in his life began to improve, Do Xuan Doan was able to begin to paint again for his personal satisfaction and passion for art. As the artistic revival of the 1990's began in Vietnam, he quickly rose to the forefront of the milieu and is now the leader of a new generation of Vietnamese artists, working in more creative, vivid, forms and colors.
Do Xuan Doan is a romanticist with a sense of humor. The inspiration for his paintings comes from the depths of his heart and soul. He enjoys traveling throughout Vietnam, north to south, mainland to highland, and to urban and rural areas, to capture the essence of daily life and the beautiful landscape of his country.
At over 70 years of age, Do Xuan Doan continues to paint with his unique style and vibrant color palette, creating works of beauty for himself, art lovers, and life. His works have been internationally exhibited, and can be found in collections in the United States, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Hong Kong, Germany, Singapore, Japan, England, Indonesia, Austrailia, and Canada.
Do Xuan Doan states, "Painting is my greatest passion and my destiny is to live and die by the brush."
