| A native Californian, Downs graduated from Whittier College in 1967 and enrolled in Claremont Graduate School to study art. From 1969 70, he was a teaching assistant at Arizona State University Art Department. Sculpture had been his passion from the time he was a child, and he decided to pursue it. After a year learning his craft at an art bronze foundry, in 1971 he became a full-time sculptor.
