This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in San Jose, CA on Sept. 8, 1881. Edwina was the daughter of James Frank Devendorf, one of the founders of Carmel, CA. A deaf-mute from birth, she graduated from the CCAC in 1913 and further studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute and in Brussels and other places in Europe. From 1902 she spent much of her time at the family cottage in Carmel where she painted the rugged coastline. After her father's death in 1934, she lived in Oakland and continued producing artworks at the family estate. She seldom exhibited or sold any of her paintings or sculptures, preferring to give them to friends and relatives. In 1950 her bronze portrait of her father was placed in Devendorf Plaza (named for her father) in Carmel. A spinster, she spent her last years in Towle, a small town in Placer County, CA. She died there on Sept. 4, 1954.
