| Emily Edwards is not only known as a fine art painter and block printer, but also known as a writer and art historian. She authored several publications and was responsible for establishing the San Antonio Conservation Society.
Edwards, who also painted under the name of Emily De Cantebrana, was born in San Antonio, Texas and was educated in the public school system, followed by studies at the Ursuline Academy. For a short period of time, she was a student of Robert Julian Onderdonk. In 1905 she started studies at the Art Institute of Chicago under the instruction of John H. Vanderpoel, Harry Mills Walcott, Ralph Elmer Clarkson, and Enella Benedict.
In 1917 Edwards returned to San Antonio, Texas to begin teaching at the high school level. In 1923, she helped to establish the San Antonio Conservation Society, serving as the first president from 1925-1926. In addition, she traveled to Mexico in the summers and attended classes conducted by Diego Rivera. There she married a man named De Cantebrana. She also created many watercolors and woodblock prints of Mexican subjects including children.
In 1938 she returned to Chicago where she was teacher and director of the Hull House Art School. During this time, Edwards authored several books dealing with art, architecture, and life in Mexico and San Antonio.
She died in San Antonio in 1980.
Edwards was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. Her exhibitions included the Art Institute of Chicago; Annual Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, New York (1922); Annual Texas Artists Exhibition, Fort Worth; Edgar B. Davis Competition, San Antonio; Witte Memorial Museum, San Antonio; Women Artists of Texas and the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas.
