| Alfonzo Eugene Julian De Vol was born in Illinois on March 2, 1885. After studying with Ulmark, Blomfield, and Jonas Lie at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, DeVol later served as assistant director of that school. When it opened in 1921, he moved to California to assume directorship of the San Diego Academy of Fine Arts, and continued in that position until his death on Jan. 7, 1929.
