This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Raised in Wolf Point, Montana on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, Floyd DeWitt had an early exposure to horses, the subject matter that along with abstract figures became the focus of his sculpture. Using sketchbook and his talent for drawing he began as a young man studying the interaction between horses and their cowboy and Indian riders.
DeWitt served in the Army where he was exposed to many other cultures, and then he returned to his hometown where he had odd jobs including bartending, ranch handing, and being a cop. Feeling restless, he went to Minneapolis where he enrolled in the Minneapolis School of Art and Design and came under the tutelage of sculptor Paul Granlund and painter David Ratner. They both encouraged him to find his own style of expression.
In 1961, he went to Amsterdam for six years, having earned a scholarship, and spent long hours with talented young sculptors in Europe. By the late 1960s, he was gaining commissions from corporations and private entities including the Dutch Ministry of Culture.
In the mid 1980s, he returned to the United States with his wife and daughter to care for his parents but continued to fill European commissions including a portrait of composer Gustav Mahler for the Municipal Music Center in Utrecht.
In the U.S. he won top honors from the National Sculpture Society, from the National Academy of Western Art, and the Sculpture in the Park competition in Loveland, Colorado.
He is very selective about his gallery representation and is careful to protect his reputation.
