Francis Daniel Devlan was born in 1835 in Paterson, New Jersey. He came to Reading, Pennsylvania with his family around 1840. He began drawing at an early age, and eventually drew many cartoons for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper during the Civil War. But he is most well known for his keen oil paintings of cows and bulls, in vivid landscapes.
While exhibiting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Devlan's paintings were described as the "pictures painted by a boy up (showing 500 of 795 characters). |
