This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in England.  Dangerfield was educated as a civil engineer, but opted to act in minor roles on the London stage.  While in this capacity, he began scene painting and excelled at it.  As the original designer of Gilbert & Sullivan's productions, he came to New York under their auspices in 1889.  While in San Francisco in 1892, he painted scenes for the Grand Opera House.  He then returned to his atelier in Chicago and by 1895 was in New Orleans.
