| | Born in Dedham, MA on April 3, 1823. After graduating from West Point, Derby served in the Mexican War in California in 1846. After the war he worked in California with the Topographical Bureau and contributed humorous drawings to the San Diego Herald and The Pioneer. He was the author of Caricaturist in California. Derby died in New York on May 15, 1861.
