Biography from Im Kinsky Kunst Auktionen, Vienna:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Gerhild Diesner was born on August 4, 1915 in Innsbruck.  She attended the college for women's design.  1935 to 1937 she lived in England, where she attended the Chelsea Art School and then the School of Art in Brighton.  In 1937 she moved to Munich to study at the Academy of Applied Arts in the Department of Applied Graphics.

Despite the troubled war times, she managed in 1943 to obtain grants to study in Paris at the Académie André Lhote and at the Ecole de la Grande Chaumiere.  French Modern Art was her significant source of inspiration. Though an affinity to the Fauvism of Henri Matisse and other great examples such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin is clearly evident in her works, soon her independent handwriting became apparent.

In the years after the war she reached her artistic peak.  She was prominent within the Tyrolean art world and also exhibited in Vienna, at the "Art Club" for example. Sensational was her participation in the Biennale for women in Bolzano, where her paintings were shown alongside those of Sonja Delaunay.

After her divorce from Bodo Kampmann 1953 she withdrew socially and barely exhibited.  The later years of creativity of the artist were influenced by her love of travel and her love of Mediterranean culture.
"At the lake I've painted a lot, washerwomen on the lake, vineyards, cypress trees, fishing boats.  Capri and Tuscany, are close  to my heart.  By nature, I can never get enough," said the artist herself.
