Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Marine painter. Born in Russia on June 24, 1860. Dietz had early art lessons from his uncle Nielander and in St Petersburg. Due to political unrest he left Russia in 1876. Upon immigrating to England, he continued his art studies for several years. He then moved to Queensland, Australia where he was official artist for a government expedition to New Guinea. In 1889 he settled into a studio in San Francisco and was active there until the earthquake of 1906. Many of his paintings were lost in the disaster. He died in Healdsburg, CA on Nov. 10, 1923. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1891-99; SFAA, 1906. Bay of SF, vol. 2, p. 390; CD; DR.
