Horace Wolfe Duesbury

Horace Wolfe Duesbury was a painter of portraits, landscapes, mountains, rivers, and coastal scenes. He was born in Sheffield, England in 1851 and died in Alameda, CA in April of 1904.  He studied in Australia and exhibited his work at the San Francisco Art Museum; the Portland Mechanics' Fair from 1879 to 1883 where he won several awards; and the San Francisco Art Association in 1885.

In 1876 Duesbury arrived in San Francisco and in 1879 he moved to Portland, OR where he earned a living painting portraits.  He moved back to San Francisco in 1886 and died in Alameda eight years later.  Some of his sitters were Richard Pahl, 1898; Laura Pahl; Mrs. Olivia Hoyt Hastings, 1884?; the Mejia Sisters, 1898; Edward D. Harmon; Henry S. Foote; and Father F. N. Blanchet, 1881, the first Catholic Archbishop of Oregon City.

Duesbury's work is in the collections of M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco; the Hastings College of Law in San Francisco; the California Historical Society in San Francisco; the Oakland Museum in Oakland, CA; the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson MI; and the Oregon Historical Society in Portland, OR.

Born in Sheffield, England on March 20, 1851. After his education in England, Duesbury moved to Australia where he studied art. He was active there until 1876 when he immigrated to San Francisco. In a studio in the Donahue Bldg on Market Street he painted many portraits of local citizens as well as a few landscapes and still lifes. Duesbury remained a resident of San Francisco and Alameda except for the years 1879-86 which were spent in Portland, OR. He died of heart failure in Alameda, CA on March 31, 1904. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1876-96; Portland Mechanics' Fair, 1879-83 (medals); SFAA, 1885-89; Calif. State Fair, 1887-93. In: CHS; De Young Museum; Hastings Law College (portrait of Hastings); McHenry Museum (Modesto); Oregon Historical Society.
