| Jacob Dallas was the son of a wealthy Philadelphia merchant, he moved to Missouri in 1833 with his family. On graduating from Ames Colles around 1843, he returned to Philadelphia to study painting with Bass Otis at the Pennsylvania Academy. Around 1850 to his death in 1857 he lived in New York City, where he worked with Daniel Hungtington, Charles Lehr, George R. West, William Heine and other on a number of large panoramas.
