This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Jane Dickson was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 18, 1952. She studied at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1976 and at Harvard where she received a Bachelor of Art degree in 1976. She came to New York in 1978. Having studied computer animation in college, she qualified soon after her arrival for a job working on the Spectacolor computer billboard above Times Square. When she left the job, she was hooked on the effects of light on a black board and hooked on her surroundings.

Dickson brings an unpredictable quality to a familiar scene; she paints people doing ordinary things on the streets below where she lives in Times Square. Mothers pushing baby carriages, peep shows, cheek by jowl with hat stores and large carnival pictures are typical. As Dickson herself says "I'm interested in subjects that are attractive and repellent at the same time, like neon - it's garish and wonderful."

She taught at the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1988 and 1989, and Temple University, Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia 1990.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Jane Dickson's mosaic murals, commissioned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, populate the 42nd Street New York Times Square subway station in Manhattan.  Depictions of New Year's Eve revelers, they are "outfitted with party hats and horns, the approximately 70 life-size figures frolic in the passageway connecting the Seventh and Eight Avenue lines, perpetually waiting for the ball to drop over Times Square and ready to ring in a new year. " (44)

According to the artist, the goal of her project was "to energize the long corridor with figures that seem to travel through the space with passersby 'implying movement and creating a continuous rhythm' ".

Dickson's murals are part of the MTA's permanent artwork commissions, and are especially meaningful to the artist who has had a Times Square studio since the 1970s and has spent many New Year's Eves watching that famous ball drop.
