Jean Demosthene Dugourc (1749-1825)

A student of Saint -Aubin, he became known before the Revolution by a large engraving titled, Prayer Venus, after Netscher, as well as drawings of gallant subjects, costumes and even portraits.  He tried new methods in engraving ornaments, and in these, he showed true talent as a draftsman and engraver.  Dugourc distinguished himself in the making of Playing Cards for the New Republic.  Main allegories in Dugourc cards  are War, Trade, Peace and the Arts, Cults, Professions, Marriage and the Press.

After this excursion into the field of wood engravings,  Dugourc designed the bust, medallion and tomb of Marie- Elisabeth Joly, a French theater actress.  With Berthaud, he designed and engraved an Egyptian Temple.

He then turned to the illustration of the poetry of the Empire: the Temple of Memories - Mespauvres little lambs - Venet venet, my dear sheep - and the vignettes of the Incas, of Atala, etc.  On the pieces of Atala is written: " Painted by Dugourc, royal designer of menus.  This is where the old Republican playing card designer has ended up.
