| Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Aug. 8, 1871. In his youth Donovan worked in Detroit at various jobs including steward and manager of the Detroit Boat Club. While employed there, he began painting in the winters and attended John Ward Dunsmore Art School. He then worked as a cartoonist-reporter for the Detroit Free Press. At the turn of the century he further studied art in London, Paris, and Ireland. Upon returning in 1904, he married the daughter of a San Bernardino rancher.
