| Born in Dublin, Ireland, John Dixey went to London as a youth to study at the Royal Academy. He is said to have been selected to go to Italy in 1789 for further study, that same year he came to America. He worked for a time in Philadelphia, but by 1801 was established in New York City as a carver and gilder. He is known as an ornamental sculptor, but exhibited at the American Academy and the Pennsylvania Academy.
His two sons were also artists, George Dixey was a carver and sculptor and John V. Dixey was a landscape painter.
