Born in Plymouth, PA on July 3, 1875, Derby settled in Los Angeles in 1892 and later studied art there at the ASL.
At the turn of the century he designed posters and labels for local lithographers, and later was head of design at Western Lithograph. By the late 1920s he was pursuing a career as a freelance artist while painting fine art and exhibiting locally. He was also a composer of semi-classical music. Derby died in Los Angeles on Dec. 5, 1943.
