This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| An immigrant to California in 1879, John Dickinson became noted for his landscapes, portraits, and hand-tinted photographs. He was born in London, England, and settled in San Francisco when he was 35 years old. He had studied art in London, Paris, and Munich, and was in New York before coming to California, exhibiting at the National Academy of Design in 1878.
Many of his paintings, often landscapes of Northern California, were lost in the California earthquake of 1906.
