A portrait miniature artist and dioramist, John Wood Dodge was born in New York City where he lived in the early part of his career. He was primarily self taught although he had some training from a sign painter. In New York, he was a member of the National Academy.
In 1839, suffering ill health, he moved to Southern states and lived as an itinerant, basing himself for ten years in Nashville, Tennessee. There Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay were among his portrait sitters. Among the places (showing 500 of 1060 characters). |
