This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in San Antonio, TX on July 15, 1906. After earning a degree in liberal arts at Columbia University, Danysh further studied at Northwestern University in Chicago. He came to San Francisco in 1932 and joined the staff of the Argonaut as art and music critic. In that year he established a modern art-photography gallery in San Francisco with Ansel Adams. In 1935 he was appointed director of the Works Progress Administration Art Project for the western states. At the end of this project he was director of the American art building at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. He then headed the Federal Art Project in NYC. He returned to California in 1955 as president of the CCAC. Retiring in 1959, Danysh settled on the Monterey Peninsula where he remained until his death at his home in Carmel on Aug. 8, 1982. As well as an artist, he wrote poetry, several novels, and How To Quit Smoking Without Trying.
