This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Josef Di Sigall was born in Brody, Poland on May 18, 1891. Sigall was educated in Vienna and was a gold medalist at the Royal Art Academy during 1909-15. In Europe he painted nearly all contemporary monarchs including King George VI. He came to the U.S. in 1922 and painted portraits of Presidents Coolidge, Hoover, Roosevelt, their families and cabinets. He moved to Los Angeles in 1926 via Argentina. By the 1930s he had moved north to Saratoga where he owned a 70-acre estate. He later returned to Los Angeles and made trips to the Mojave Desert to paint Indian scenes. While on his way to paint the portrait of Harry Truman, he was in an auto accident in Oklahoma. During his long recovery he bought a home there. Sigall died while vacationing in La Jolla, CA on Sept. 16, 1953.

Works Held: Montgomery Theater, San Jose Municipal Auditorium; University of Santa Clara .
