From New Jersey, Joseph Domareki studied at Newark State College, earning a BA degree in 1937. He served in World War II in the Navy in the Pacific, and also was a combat artist covering campaings in the Gilbert, Caroline, and Marshall Islands.
After the war, he earned an MA from the University of Iowa in 1947. He became Chair of the Art Department in 1964 of the School District of South Orange and Maplewood, New Jersey.
