This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born in Louisville, Kentucky in a family of six children, Lucy McGowan (later Diecks) had early art talent that was encouraged by her parents and teachers. She studied for four years at the Corcoran School in Washington DC in the 1920s, and then went back to her home town of Louisville, where she had a 30 year career as a teacher at Atherton High School for Girls. In the evenings, she also gave classes at Louisville's Art Center Association.
During the summers, she continued her education at Syracuse University in New York and earned a B.F.A. degree. She also took art lessons in Louisville with Berlin artist Juro Kubicek and spent one summer at the Saugatuck School of Painting.
She retired from teaching in 1962. She died in Jefferson County on January 14, 1998 at age 92.
