| A plein-air landscape painter based in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, M Stephen Doherty was born in New Orleans. In addition to his painting career which takes him on world-wide travels, he has been a prolific writer and has served as Editor-in-Chief of American Artist and Watercolor magazines. He has also written several books including "The Watson-Guptill Handbook of Landscape Painting"; "Creative Oil Painting", and "Color Choices". He has served as an exhibition judge for Arts for the Parks, Watercolor West, and the International Society of Pastel Organizations, and is on the advisory board of the New York Academy of Art, the Florence Academy, the Portrait Society of America,and the American Society of Portrait Painters.
Doherty studied at Knox College and earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cornell University.
