The following information was submitted by Elaine Felhandler:

Born in Tacoma, Washington, on March 18, 1903, she studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, San Diego (1921-1923), California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco (1923-1925), and the Art Students League, New York (1926-1929).  After her return to San Francisco in 1929, her interests turned to jewelry design, and she subsequently studied metal craft with Armin Hairenian. While continuing to paint, de Patta devoted more and more time to her metal work, and by 1935 she had a workshop in her home.

In 1941, she went to Chicago, Illinois, to study with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy at the School of Design.  Margaret de Patta was a founding member of the San Francisco Metal Arts Guild, and is considered a leader in the American Modernist Jewelry movement.

Her work is in the collections of the Oakland Museum, The British Museum in London, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of Art, and the Museum of Art and Design in New York.

Margaret de Patta died in 1964.
