Little is known about Maria Dixon whose delicate quality of figure
paintings is notable. An 1886 catalog of the National Academy of Design
indicates she studied at the Art Students League with Charles Yardley
Turner. From 1883 to 1896, she exhibited yearly with the Academy.
In
1895, she exhibited at the Cotton States Exposition in Atlanta, and
beginning 1880, was showing at the Brooklyn Art Association. She signed
her paintings M.R. Dixon because of the discrimination that existed
